Don’t be deterred if the area feels a bit unpolished; Humberto’s charm lies in its authenticity and dedication to delivering bold, unapologetic flavors.
The menu is a vibrant celebration of Mexican staples, boasting highlights like their signature California Burrito, famed for its colossal size and fiery kick that packs a punch—perfect for those who relish intense spice. The Carne Asada Fries here are a must-try: crispy, loaded with tender strips of marinated steak, melted cheese, and flavorful toppings that create a deliciously indulgent bite every time. Fans of seafood will appreciate the fresh and zesty Fish Tacos, while those craving a cheesy delight will savor the Chicken and Cheese Enchiladas or the Carne Asada Quesadilla.
For a more substantial meal, the Carne Asada Plate Mucha Grasa Y Agua offers a rich and satisfying combination of flavors, embracing the traditional elements with an extra indulgent touch. On the lighter side, their Ground Beef Sopes and Roller Tacos deliver perfect snackable options that don’t skimp on authentic taste.
As one customer expressed, Humberto's tacos and burritos stand out for their generous size and bold flavors, even if the California Burrito’s spice level can be intense for some, and the meat occasionally leans toward the drier side. Yet, the affordable pricing keeps diners coming back for more. Another frequent visitor praised the genuine local vibe and personable staff that make every visit feel welcoming, even if the shop sits in a rough neighborhood.
The salsa offerings—both red and green—are a spicy highlight here, with loyal patrons praising the excellent heat and fresh kick they bring. While some find a slight inconsistency in salsa texture or flavor balance, it never detracts from the overall enjoyment and keeps guests eager for another visit to explore the depth of their spicy sauces.
Fans of specialty fries will appreciate the clever variations such as Adobada Fries and Pollo Asada Fries, each bringing a unique twist and hearty satisfaction. Just a note for cheese lovers—some recommend asking for extra cheese to elevate the experience even more.
From cans of soda to bottled water, Humberto’s keeps it simple on the beverage front, complementing its focus on robust and straightforward Mexican flavors. The casual, “hole in the wall” environment, paired with consistently hearty dishes and spicy salsas, makes Humberto's Taco Shop a cornerstone for anyone seeking that genuine San Diego taco joint vibe.
Whether you’re craving the massive burritos, the tender carne asada dishes, or just a quick bite of authentic Mexican street fare, Humberto’s Taco Shop delivers with a blend of tradition, spice, and generous portions that leave you feeling both comforted and satisfied. It’s a true local gem that invites food lovers to savor bold tastes in an unpretentious, friendly setting.
California Burrito Ranking (4): Continuing my quest to rank San Diego's California Burritos! Stop number four: Humberto's Taco Shop. Product: The burrito was the largest I've ever seen, served incredibly quickly. It was fiery hot, almost too much so.Personally, I found the meat a bit dry. It's the cheapest burrito I've had in the city. They offer very spicy sauces. 5 out of 10 Service: The interaction was decent. 4 out of 10 Ambiance: Vibrant colors. Customers carve messages directly into the tables. When I arrived, it was quiet, but soon a large crowd formed and the line extended right to my table. 4 out of 10
WHERE DEADPOOL BUYS HIS CHIMICHANGAS! I came in because I was craving some yummy Mexican cuisine and also wanted to celebrate Deadpool's comic con weekend and to grab his fav food item (I know I'm weird haha). I'm glad I came here! You can tell this is a local hangout and the staff are pretty personable. It's in a borderline grimy part of town, however don't let it deter you, I recommend visiting! I ordered a chimichanga with chicken, green sauce and guacamole! It was AMAZING! The meal was perfectly fried and tasted so fresh. Some of the toppings provided were a little refrigerated so I didn't use them (I'm looking at you lettuce). I would recommend eating the chimichangas as they're served and with the toppings that they already placed on them. Don't add any of the other stuff they give you haha. Seating is minimal, don't expect to bring a large group as there's only a few small tables inside. I didn't spot any seating outside. The tables are a bit dirty inside so I would recommend takeout. Humberto's is a traditional taco shop, you order at the counter and wait for your order. Once you're called, you go back up to the counter to pick up your food. Note: I ordered fries and they were a little limp, like something you'd get at weinerschnitzel. Not bad, but could be firmer.
Excellent place for delicious 'hole in the wall food'. REALLY good green AND red hot sauce. Service with a smile. VERY popular. Usually a line. Unfortunately for our budget, it's extremely high priced cuz we're long time customers. Plus, miss being able to buy 12 rolled tacos. Now choice is either 3 or 5 rolled tacos. And the 8 rolled tacos cost more than what the 12 rolled tacos cost.
one of the few taco shops in San Diego that prices match the quality and quantity!! I’m a big salsa person, and i wish their red salsa could be a bit more consistent. Sometimes too watery, other times too much garlic, or too much tomato and not enough chile. Still even with that i’m still going there. Great spot.
The adobada fries are really good. Wish they had a bit more cheese.
Humberto's is my go-to spot. Food is still some of the best in San Diego, meat is well. Good portions and quick service. If you haven't been here yet I highly recommend it
I had absolutely the BEST fish taco EVER at Humberto’s this afternoon! I’ll admit I was very hungry, but the tomatoes, onions, cabbage, and other ingredients were fresh and crisp, and the white sauce (crema) was totally cold and fresh, perfectly complementing the hot and crunchy white fish. Yummm… what a flavorful mouthful! Humberto’s may look like the typical taco shop, but WOW! What outstanding flavors and excellent attention to detail the chef delivered with a humble taco can’t be overstated. Humberto’s food is truly amazing! The restaurant itself isn’t much to write home about, but the artwork/murals that adorn the place are pretty special. It’s worth a visit just to check out the mural on the exterior restaurant wall. Very cool. Check this place out for lunch or dinner sometime soon. You and your family will be very glad you did.
Really good food, carne asada fries is good, and california burrito is very tasty. Gets busy at times.
